Ren's Handbook for Queer Resilience

Resilience isn’t just about surviving tough times—it’s about thriving, finding joy, and staying connected to our authentic selves. For queer folks, resilience means rising above systemic challenges while nurturing our individual and collective strength. This guide offers a roadmap to building resilience, honoring yourself, and supporting your community.

1. Prioritize Self-Care Every Day

True self-care is more than bubble baths; it’s about taking action in five key areas. Aim to do something for each of these "buckets" daily:

  • Physical: Move your body, nourish it with good food, stay hydrated, and take medications if needed.

  • Mental/Emotional: Process your feelings, learn something new, or simply play and enjoy life.

  • Social: Deepen your relationships through conversation, shared activities, or acts of kindness.

  • Practical: Get ahead of stress by tackling chores or errands.

  • Spiritual: Reflect, pray, meditate, or connect with something greater than yourself.

Building resilience starts with meeting your own needs first.

2. Set Boundaries About Worrying

Worry can be paralyzing, but you can take control:

  • Journal your worries daily to stop them from piling up in your head.

  • Schedule "worry time" and stick to it. When time’s up, shift to a different activity.

  • Replace worry with gratitude by listing what you're thankful for.

  • Learn to sit with discomfort and let it pass without judgment.

These strategies can help you break free from endless cycles of anxiety.

3. Reframe Your Challenges

The way we talk to ourselves matters. Shift your mindset with empowering reframes:

  • Instead of "Why is this happening to me?" → Ask, "What is this teaching me?"

  • Replace "This is too hard" with "This is challenging, but I can do it."

  • When overwhelmed, remind yourself: "I can take things one step at a time."

Words can transform your perspective and unlock strength you didn’t know you had.

4. Focus on What You Can Control

Resilience flourishes when you take ownership of your actions and choices. Start small:

  • Set daily intentions and establish routines.

  • Break big goals into manageable steps.

  • Limit screen time and practice gratitude.

  • Learn new skills and ask for help when needed.

  • Own your mistakes and grow from them.

You have more control than you think—focus on the things within your reach.

5. Build and Lean on Community

Resilience is a team sport. Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you:

  • Find Allies: Seek out visible signs of support in GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) or ERG (Employee Resource Group) networks.

  • Engage in Queer Spaces: Join online forums, LGBTQ+ community centers, or attend events like drag shows and queer art collectives.

  • Support LGBTQ+ Organizations: Shop at queer-owned businesses, donate to LGBTQ+ nonprofits, and volunteer your time to meaningful causes.

In challenging times, community is your sanctuary and strength.

6. Use Art as Resistance and Resilience

Art is more than expression; it’s a form of healing and defiance. Explore creative outlets to process emotions, reduce stress, and empower yourself:

  • Write It Down: Journaling, poetry, essays, or even a to-do list can be cathartic.

  • Make It Visual: Try painting, drawing, photography, or collage.

  • Get Moving: Dance, try yoga, or take a “color walk” where you notice vibrant hues around you.

  • Make Noise: Play an instrument, sing, or create a playlist that resonates with your mood.

Art connects us to our deepest selves while helping us push back against systems that oppress us.

Support Trans Artists and Activists

Art fuels cultural change by amplifying diverse voices and challenging outdated norms. Supporting trans creators like myself isn’t just about individual empowerment—it’s about building a more inclusive and compassionate world.

Join our fight through initiatives like the "Here to Pee" tour, where trans comedians raise funds to combat anti-trans bathroom bills across all 50 states. Attend shows, share posts, and help us spread our message.

Final Thoughts

Resilience isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. With self-care, reframing, community, and creativity, you can weather any storm and thrive.

Thank you for showing up for yourself and for your community. We need your light, your voice, and your strength. I love you, and everything is going to be okay.
